Basketball Practice Begins Monday
At last, long awaited basketball training has begun and most of the girls are making the sacrifice. There are three lettermen back this year. They are Anne King, Vivian Hickson, and Juanice Eudy. Mr. Day is coaching the girls this year and we do mean "coaching." Five different exercises, twenty of each, are done and about ten laps are run.
There are thirty-two girls in training--fourteen guards and eighteen forwards. The guards are: Vivian Hickson, Helen Adams, Mary Norwood, Barbara Dennehy, Anne King, Nita Thomas, Patsy Smith, Doris Freeman, Doris Smith, Letha Thomas, Doris Bolding, Nedra Yates, Bonnie Shipley, and Billie Jo Griffin. The forwards are: Margaret Jones, Bobby Tanner, Bettye Cole, Betty Bragg, Juanice Eudy, Lloyde Pinion, Betty Taylor, Mazeppa Ligon, Lemma Jones, Betty Kinard, LeAnn McClure, Margaret Taylor, Marilou Feagin, Nora Brennan, Margie Miller, and Betty Nichols.
"Coach" Day has hopes for a grand team, and we all have hopes for winning district.
Spanish Class Organizes Club
The Spanish class organized a club called the "Conquistadores de Espanol." (There has been some trouble with the pronunciation of the name). The purpose of this club is to help us learn more about the people who speak this language we are studying. Our officers are Bridget Brennan, president; Edward Nichols, vice president; and Elda Osborne, secretary and treasurer.
This is the first year Spanish has been taught in Forney High School since 1944, when it was taught by Miss Clovis Elwell. It was offered for the first time here by Mrs. Hayden Hensley in 1942.
Halloween
Halloween belongs to youth. It is a time for spooking, gaiety, and pranks. Often times, youth misinterprets and misuses this occasion in destructive ways.
For example, one should not destroy or carry off property but apply the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," when tempted to do otherwise on Halloween.
The beauty of our town is marred when windows are soaped and implements and trash are piled in the streets and on top of buildings. These implements have to be returned either by the guilty culprit of the prank or the owner. Where does the fun come in here????
Why mistreat animals? This sort of pranking shows a streak of sadism. Mistreating an animal is viciousness and not pranking.
It is hoped that the young people of our school will make this Halloween a precedent by leaving off all acts of vandalism and destruction.
Related above are some "should nots" but here is a question to the parents and friends of our youth, "What can the young people of this town do to replace this so-called fun????????"
Views on Halloween
by Walter Riter
At this time of year any male big enough to go out without mama or big sister begins to look at all movable outside fixtures with a contemplative eye. Just what he is contemplating would be hard to say.
While most people view Halloween with a tolerant eye some property owners look forward to it with some concern. A few with making bold to voice dire threats against the furlowing little darlings.
However, despite all this no great damage has ever been done. Even a child knows that it doesn't hurt a brand new trailer or a good wagon to be dismantled and scattered impartially about the town. Also anyone knows it can't hurt car horns to honk into the night, as this only runs down the battery. Anyone can replace windows, too. Persons who become perturbed over harmless antics like these certainly must be narrow minded.

A Speech
by Nelda Tatum
As you all know this is my first year in Forney High, and I think it is a very nice school. I want you to know I enjoy going to Forney High and I hope you enjoy having me here. I think the teachers are nice and the kids are, too. That is all I have to say about F.H.S.
A Speech
by Dolores Faubion
Well, first I'm going to say that I'm not a good hand at writing speeches (as you will find out), but I do want all of you to know I like Forney High School. I think all the kids are very nice, and all good sports. As for the teachers ---- I think they are just grand. And after all, this is what makes a good school. I hope also that you will enjoy having me as a Forney student as much as I enjoy being one.

The Forney-Ferris football game will be played Friday night, October 31, 1947. Be there and root for the home team. We also would like to see a lot more of the girls in the pep squad this week.
Eighth Grade
The seventh and eighth grades are working on decorations for Halloween. We plan to have our party in Linniel Taylor's back yard on Thursday from six until nine o'clock.
We elected Home Room Mothers and Fathers Thursday. Mrs. Carmichael, Mrs. McGlon, Mr. Mitchell, and Mr. Bane were elected.
Our personality this week is a boy. He is about four foot nine. He is in the eighth grade. His hair is brown, (it is not curly, but nice).
He is very much of a football fan. He likes to look out the window in English class. He is thirteen years of age. Coconut pie is his favorite food.
He has lived in Forney since he was in the sixth grade. Have you guessed????????
He is Frank Carmichael, our eighth grade class president.

That's How It Happened
It's All 'Ours!
Once upon a time, long, long ago, two boys were playing in the sand.
One noticed a stick he had stuck in the sand earlier that morning. The stick's shadow fell at a different place.
He cried out to his friend, "Look, I've an idea." When the shadow hits this rock we'll start playing; and when it hits that rock we'll fish until it hits this one." etc. till he had twelve different rocks for different purposes in a circle about the stick.
"Goody," exclaimed the other boy, "I want it, it's mine." "It's not," cried the other, "it's mine."
"I know," said the first boy, "let's call them ours (hours)."
And that's how ours (hours) were invented.

A Glimpse of Glamour
We are, at last, getting a taste of cool weather. Everyone is pulling out those fall clothes in a hurry and oh, but they look and feel good.
Jean Williams should have taken a prize for that darling brown suit she was wearing Monday. There are many other suits on the campus now. Vivian's is one that should be mentioned. A beautiful gray wool pinstriped with cute little silver buttons and (ummmm) did it ever fit...
Peggy Roberson had on a darling combined dark and light gray dress. The skirt was of dark gray velvet and the top was light gray wool. There was a small stripe of dark gray velvet down each sleeve.
Margaret Jones had on a blue checked blouse and gray skirt Tuesday. The blouse had long sleeves with small turned up cuffs.
Dolly Stewart looked very attractive in a yellow sweater and a brown and white checked skirt.
Miss Riley had on a cute suit Monday. It was forest green and with it she wore a coral blouse. We most certainly can say that Miss Riley is in style.
Pat Hancock had on a cute jaquard sweater Monday. It was red with white reindeer. The reindeer give us a hint of Christmas. Brrrrr.
Our editor had on a cute outfit Tuesday. It consisted of a blue three-quarter sleeve blouse and a brown skirt. Of course, it is Dorothy Smith.
This week we will have a few boys on the glamour section. Young Powell had on a bright red plaid shirt that was really bright. Wendell Tanner also had on a red plaid shirt.
I wonder what kind of fashions we will find on Halloween. We really can't tell. If they go out "spooking" they will probably want to be disguised.
A lot of the girls on the F.H.S. campus have been wearing Gibson Girl blouses lately. We saw Norma Poston and Pat Flaherty with them on. Norma's is blue and white striped and Pat's is nut brown and dark brown on a cream colored background.
Sally Moore had on a brown and white checked skirt with a yellow sweater and a white blouse Monday. Very attractive, Sally.
Nedra Yates had on a lime green suit with a sweater of the same color.
Swish of a Tale
It seems that Anne King and Clarence Williams are going steady again. Keep it up this time, kids....
What is this we hear about Margaret Taylor going to a dance with a cute boy from T.M.C. His name is Mickey Valentino.
Nedra Yates also seems to be getting up a case with one of the boys at T.M.C. Tell us, girls, what is your technique??????????
Why doesn't Bill Singleton care to go to Mesquite anymore???? Come on, Bill, what happened??
Wonder what Pat Hancock and Jim Mike Harris have a case of???????? Whatever it is, it must be OK. Anyway it seems to agree with both of them.
Could any of you give us any information as to what Kenneth Smith does with his spare time???? We wonder, don't we, Juanice?????
We have been seeing Norma Poston with so many different boys lately that we can't tell with whom she is really going. How about telling us, Norma?????
Who is Billy Reames going to ask to the sophomore part. It's no use trying to keep it a secret, we'll find out sooner or later...
Did the boy find out about Kenneth Smith, Dolores??? Could be....
What is this we hear about Dickie King making eyes at Margie Miller in typing class? How about confirming the rumor, you two????
With whom has Jimmy Smith been wanting a date??? Could it be Dolores Faubion????
Pat Flaherty says that she is going to have a house warming when she moved to Dallas. I wonder how the Forney girls and boys will like the boys and girls from Woodrow Wilson? Not much telling, is there?????
Has Ervin Layne seen Marlene McQueen lately or is Kenneth beating his time?? It's possible, very possible.......
Ervin Layne, did you know that you had a secret admirer?????? Maybe someday you will find out who it is.
With whom were Norma and Nelda Sunday evening??? Could it have been two boys from Pleasant Grove???
Bobby Tanner and Irene Stone seemed quite happy Saturday. Could it have been because James "Sonny" Evans was down from Alba??? I bet it was.
Does anyone know the cute blonde-haired boy that was in Forney Sunday? If anyone does there is a certain Junior girl that would like to know..
Seems as if quite a few of the kids in Forney like Terrell. Is it because of the skating rink, or do they have other interests? How about this Bettye Cole, Patsy Buick, Vivian Hickson, and Nedra Yates??? We have our doubts.
Seems as if Betty Bragg couldn't make it to school Monday morning. What's the matter, Bet????????
Could someone tell us for whom Doris Freeman's heart is beating??? Is it still Raymond Finch or is it someone new???
Why was Helen Adams so happy over receiving a letter from a certain person. We hear that Vivian Hickson received one from the same person. How about this girls?????
Mazeppa Ligon and John Denton are getting along just fine... Just keep it up kids.
Can anyone tell us who Doris Smith likes????? We have heard her talking about a certain person a lot the past few weeks... Come on, Doris, you can't keep it a secret always...

While waiting for our workbooks, we are studying checks, check stubs, and the general use of banking services. We are also taking up bookkeeping for personal and social organizations.
We hope our workbooks will come in soon, but as there is nothing we can do to hurry them we will just have to be patient.
Homemaking News
by Billie Griffin and Frances Kasper
The H.E. boys had their first lab lesson Monday. They made fudge; and it seems, in general everyone's fudge came out OK. (At least, everyone thought their's was good anyway).
They will have to work on their manners in the lab, however.
The first year girls are studying the preparation of breakfast. They are planning breakfast menus and the balancing and writing of menus. They have finished studying courtesies on the street and in the home.
The H.E.III girls are planing simple refreshments for the Homemaking Club which will meet Friday afternoon.
We are continuing our discussion of leisure time activities. We have found out how much money each of our familes spend on leisure time each year.
