Funeral services under the direction of Anderson-Clayton Funeral Chapel were held this morning at 10:30 o'clock for Mrs. Madison B. Brooks who died in her sleep Friday.
The Rev. W.C. Fields, Episcopal priest of Dallas officiated at the service held in the family residence. Interment was in the Hillcrest cemetery.
A pioneer Forney resident, Jessie Lewis Brooks was born in Forney June 20, 1877 the daughter of John and Leona Lewis, pioneer residents of the area.
The family founded the Lewis Academy, a private school, in the days before public schools were available in the area. The academy building later was given to the school district by the family.
Mrs. Brook was a graduate of Mary Nash College at Sherman and also studied art under Frank Reaugh of Dallas and was well known not onlyl for her art work, but for home gardening as well.
She was married to Madison B. Brooks on May 28, 1901 and to this union three children were born.
Her husband, and one son, Federal Judge Ben F. Brooks of Washington, D.C. and Arlington, Va.; one daughter, Mrs. Charles F. Green of Austin; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank M. Lewis of Kaufman and a sister, Mrs. Prentess [Kate] Holleman of Forney.
Note: Jessie Mae Lewis Brooks is buried at Hillcrest Cemetery next to her husband. According to Hillcrest records, she was born June 30, 1877 and died December 16, 1955.
