The following is an exact copy of the letter that was received by Mr. J.M. Lewis, from the so-called "White Caps," below that is his answer:
Mr. J.M. Lewis,
Sir: You have been reported as a mischief maker, a briber of negroes in Elections, a slanderer of women, and having disregarded the will of your people making an appointment of Constable of your Precinct. Our Private detective also believes you have a man hired to do some work you are afraid to do yourself. Be certain that you cover your tracks well, we think you have gone far enough for a man of your sense and courage. If we hear any more complaints we will find time to wait on you we only give one
warning.
WHITE CAPS.
I have been a citizen of Kaufman county for 33 years and for the greater portion of that time a citizen of the precinct and I am here to stay. The author of the above letter is a base liar. He is a liar when he says that I ever bribed negroes in any election He is a liar when he says that I have ever defamed women. In the appointment of constanble the commissioners court followed the strict letter of the law. The records of said Court are open to the public, and if any chicanery has been resorted to the cords of the country are open for the correction of the same. The truth is not in the man that wrote the above letter and he is devoid of the principles of man-hood. He is a man that would resort to incendiarism, assasionation, anything that is low and sneaking to accomplish his designs, however hellish they might be. In conclusion I will state that I will "keep my tracks covered," and will be found at my home one half mile east of depot when business does not call me away. Here I will strive to entertain all visitors and more especially those that please to denominate themselves "White Caps."
