The melancholy days have come, but our people seem not to heed the gloomy surroundings of nature. The elite of our community assembled last Friday eve at Valley View [school] and organized a literary society. Mr. Hallonquist was unanimously elected president, Mr. Norman Haynes, vice-president, Mr. T.M. Kirk, secretary. They are launching out into the vast literary field and propose to relieve the dull monotony of long winter evenings by assembling in the hall at Valley View semi-monthly and rendering a program that will be quite interesting. The following is the programme of the Valley View Literary Society for Friday night, December 13, 1891:
Music by the choir
Recitation--Miss Mary Drake
Recitation--Miss Kate Haley
Recitation--C.C. Gillespie
Banjo solo--Robin Drake
Debate--Topic will be 'Resolved, that the works of art are more attractive than the works of nature.'
