Utility Manager at Lufkin Dies

LUFKIN, Texas, Aug. 4 – Ned Douglass Shands, 59, district manager for the Texas Power & Light Company here for eighteen years, died at his home Tuesday following an extended illness. The funeral will be held at the First Baptist Church at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Shands was born at Forney, the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. N.E. Shands. He attended school in Forney and was graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in civil engineering in 1905.
The betterment of Lufkin and Angelina County constituted the lifelong interest of Mr. Shands. He was active as chairman of the industrial committee of the chamber of commerce, president of the First State Bank & Trust Company and the Angelina Building Material Company, and directory of the Texas Forest Festival.
He is survived by his wife, their son, Ned Douglass Shands, Jr.; four brothers, H.J. Shands, Lufkin; N.E. Shands and Dr. P.C. Shands, both of Mesquite; H.G. Shands, Denton, and two sisters, Miss Johnnie Shands, Forney, and Mrs. W.F. Thompson, Seattle, Wash.
