John Crenshaw of Forney holds a chuck of waxy black earth that he believes is as rich as any in the world. Terraces were built last week on the Pat Maloney farm on “Irish Ridge” at Talty, east of Dallas, in preparation for spring plowing. The ridge was settled in the 1870’s by land-conscious railroad men of Irish descent. Old Talty lies in a belt of fertile Houston clay, better known as “Blackland Gumbo” which extends east of Dallas through Forney.
