Jackrabbits Roll On, 46-0

ROCKWALL – Rockwall’s Yellowjackets knew exactly how it was with Custer at the Little Big Horn.
The ‘Jackets had a showdown of their own here Friday night and, as in the original script, the outcome was something less than successful.
The victors were the Forney Jackrabbits, and the final decision – a 46-0 walloping – only illustrates again why the Texas-sized Rabbits, with a line averaging 190 pounds, are the state’s top-ranked team in Class A football.
In reality, Friday’s contest really didn’t reach Little Big Horn proportions until the third quarter. But then, in 12 short minutes, Forney rode the power smashes of fullback Larry Bush to three quick touchdowns and an insurmountable 34-0 margin. and the final 12 points only added insult to injury.
Yardstick
Rockwall’s lone moment of glory came on its first series. The ‘Jackets moved to one first down – and it was their last of the night. After that, the ‘Rabbits were off to the races.
Forney put its first tally on the boards with 3:09 left in the initial period. A 14-yard pass, from quarterback Thomas Cheney to end George Schleback, netted the 6-pointer and capped a 59-yard march on 11 plays. Tackle Don Morrison’s kick was wide, but Forney had a 6-0 margin.
The ‘Rabbits stretched it to 13-0 with six minutes to go in the second as Cheney hit end Robert Motsenbocker with a 12-yarder to close a 57-yard drive. Morrison’s kick was true, and Forney carried a 13-0 lead into intermission.
Then came that fatal third.
Rockwall fumbled the opening kickoff; Forney recovered on the 20, and it took three plays to go the distance. Bush got it on a 1-yard blast and Morrison added the point to make it 20-0.
The next march was more legitimate as Forney stormed 64 yards in 17 trips. Bush notched the score on a 2-yard dive and Morrison – again – tacked on the conversion.
Two plays later and the ‘Rabits had another touchdown. Rockwall fumbled the kickoff; Forney recovered on the 24, and it took Bush only one crack to take it in from there. Morrison added the kick, and Forney had it sacked up, 34-0.
Quarterback Johnny Wortham passed to end Pat Adams for 29 yards and the sixth ‘Rabbit touchdown. And the seventh, with only moments left, came on a 2-yard plunge by reserve fullback Billy Curry.
Wayne McCallum, Don Wallace, and Pete Winkfein attempted to spark the sputtering ‘Jacket attack. But somehow, like Custer, they didn’t have a chance.
