After graduation from Pickton high school, Evelyn entered East Texas State Teachers College, now known as Texas A&M University, Commerce. After graduating with her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1948, she began her teaching career in Avery, Texas as a sixth grade teacher for half day and high school business teacher the remainder of the day.

In 1950 she received her Master of Science Degree and continued teaching. During the following years, she also taught eighth grade language arts, and social studies, girls P.E., Speech, and sixth grade arts and music…

Most of Evelyn’s teaching career followed the path of her husband, leading her to teach not only in Avery, but Rylie, Royse City, Forney, Stephenville, W.W. Samuel H.S., Dallas and back to Forney where she retired after 35 years of teaching.

Evelyn’s career included teacher of high school business subjects, typewriting, accounting, and shorthand. The last 17 years she was a teacher of Office Education in Stephenville, W.W. Samuel and Forney. She presented workshops for teachers at the state and national levels in her field.

She was a writer of curriculum for office education during its earliest days at East Texas University She held offices in the State and National organizations, but her joy in teaching students and seeing them learn and succeed has been the reward for her teaching career.

During her last twelve years as a teacher in Forney, her students won many district, regional, state and national awards for academic competition. She closely follows the achievements of former students today and delights in their successes.

Some of her most appreciated honors during her teaching career were being nominated as Vocational Office Education Teacher of Texas, Commendations from University Interscholastic League in 1985, Commendation from the State Office of Vocational Office Education and the National Office of Vocational Education. After retirement, Evelyn has remained active in her church and the community.

She has served as a member of the Five-Year Goals for Forney ISD, and as a member of the evaluation committee for the VOE program (now called Business Professionals of America). She has served as a teacher in her church and on various committees.

Recently she assisted in the teaching of a sixth grade girls class in her church and currently is teaching an adult Sunday School Bible Study. She is a member of the Forney Garden Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as President for two years and is currently serving as a Vice President. She also is a member of a Ladies Birthday Luncheon club, a Hat Luncheon Club and a quarterly golf club group. (Men golf and ladies shop)

Evelyn continues to read and follow the legislative system and changes regarding schools, upcoming bills affecting teachers, students and academics. She remains interested in education and subscribes to several professional magazines and newsletters.
